The present is now

“now,
he said, and now,
and never once mentioned forever,

which has nevertheless always been,
like a sharp iron hoof,
at the center of my mind.”

-One or Two Things by Mary Oliver

This is especially true today - this fall day - most likely my last academic fall where everything is overwhelming and exciting and scary. I can’t help thinking of May, about graduation and what life will be like outside the ivy walls.

I spend (some would say waste) time making to-do lists and researching post-grad programs - Peace Corps? Teach for America? Internship? Job? - instead of focusing on today.

I need to start thinking about now, about the paper I have due at 3 p.m. and about the Spanish reading I’ve neglected all semester. Today is what matters, now.
